A Kaka - one of New Zealand's native parrots. This group of parrots is unusual, retaining more primitive features lost in most other parrots, because it split off from the rest around 100 million years ago.
And here is one, not in the arms of a hunter but a conservation warden. The DOC is taking Kiwis from Ulva back to Stewart Island (and vice versa) to mix up the gene pool. This one is a juvenile female and we were privileged to get a close up view of it.
